UA Ruhr program M.Sc. Econometrics (starting WiSe 2019/20)
The new program is aimed at students with excellent English skills who have a bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics or economics - and already have some prior experience in the other disciplines. "Because it is precisely these three disciplines that econometrics brings together," explains Prof. Carsten Jentsch, Professor of Economic and Social Statistics at TU Dortmund University. This means that students in the new master's program learn statistical methods, for which they need a mathematical foundation. They then apply these methods to economic data.
To this end, they learn how to handle large amounts of data efficiently in courses offered in statistics and computer science. The aim is to answer economically relevant questions and to analyze and evaluate economic relationships. Specialists with these skills are in demand both in political consulting and in the private sector. There are also options in academia: Econometrics is both an innovative field of research and a growing area of teaching.
The economics departments of the UA Ruhr universities of Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen, as well as the Department of Statistics at TU Dortmund University, have been offering the new master's program since the 2019/20 winter semester. It is the first degree program to be offered jointly by all three universities in the Ruhr region. Coordinated schedules enable efficient studying across locations. The conception and establishment of the new cross-university master's program was supported by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR).
